Asylum Murders

Power, Secrets, and Survival in 19th-Century Australia

On this episode of Big Blend Radio’s “Books & Authors” show, author Michael G. Colburn discusses his historical mystery Asylum Murders, part of his Lady Black Mystery Series. Drawing on real events and deep research, Colburn explores how the disturbing history of 19th-century asylums provides the backdrop for a suspenseful and thought-provoking story.

During the conversation, Colburn reflects on his transition from business to fiction writing, the importance of research in historical storytelling, and the challenge — and reward — of writing from a female perspective through his protagonist, Lady Edith Black. The episode also examines creativity as a lifelong process, from walking as inspiration to the way books invite readers to co-create meaning.

🖋️ Book Review by Nancy J. Reid (Big Blend Radio & Big Blend Magazines)

“Stay strong, make good decisions, and trust your instincts.”

Set in 1800s Australia, Asylum Murders opens amid political intrigue when the ceremonial Mace, a symbol of governmental authority, disappears following a night of revelry involving members of parliament. At the same time, a young woman is found near death, drawing investigator Lady Edith Black into a dangerous investigation.

Hiding her past as a thief while forging a new identity as a detective, Edith is led to the infamous Kew Asylum after her close friend Britina — a novice nun — reveals that patients have gone missing. When Britina herself is declared criminally insane and imprisoned, Edith risks everything to uncover the truth. What follows is a descent into conspiracy, patient abuse, and chilling medical secrets hidden behind institutional power.

Both suspenseful and unsettling, Asylum Murders is a gripping mystery and a sobering examination of what happens when unchecked authority is placed in the hands of officialdom. Colburn’s novel is as thought-provoking as it is engaging, shining a light on historical injustice while delivering a compelling and atmospheric story.
